Overview
We reside in a world of abundance, akin to a vast marketplace where a myriad of options beckons. Among the plethora, notable mentions include Disney, Netflix, HBO, and AMC. Each time I embark on watching a movie or TV show, it transforms into a quest to discover something emotionally resonant and truly captivating. The quest is no easy feat, especially considering the myriad of options available out there in the wild.
I've noticed a trend among major players engaging in a competition to showcase their 'wokeness,' often casting individuals who don't quite fit the role in the name of inclusion. Furthermore, the situation worsens when they introduce characters that come off as shallow and uninspiring, merely to cater to a small demographic group. This not only tarnishes the quality of the film but also ends up wasting my time.
Now, I am unveiling a list of five movies and TV shows that not only captivated my attention but also proved to be time well spent. If you're looking to invest a few hours behind the screen in contemplating quality content, I highly recommend exploring my curated selection.
But first, allow me to introduce you to 'Hallyuwood'[1], the South Korean equivalent of its well-known American counterpart. It is a robust entertainment sector that sees a continual annual increase in revenue, drawing in a growing global audience. According to Statista's forecast, the total revenue for the year 2024 is anticipated to be 910 million, showing an annual growth rate of 10.57%. By 2027, this figure is projected to skyrocket to a staggering 1.23 billion[2]. It signifies that the Korean creative scene has the potential to produce remarkable content, and it's worth keeping a vigilant eye on it. There's a possibility that it might unveil some hidden gems in the world of cinema.
My Selection
-
Moving (Korean: 무빙)
- Seasons: 1
- Episodes: 20
If you enjoy watching individuals with superpowers kicking butt and find yourself exhausted of Marvel's offerings, you should definitely check out this TV series.
The story revolves around a group of young students who are aware of their superpowers but are attempting to conceal them at the request of concerned parents. However, as expected, bullying becomes inevitable in this scenario, leading to some intriguing developments (It doesn't constitute the main storyline). This show also delves into themes of first love, kindness, shattered dreams, revenge, manipulation, family, and cruelty.
Ultimately, Americans are portrait as bad guys
I binge-watched the entire show in a single day, eagerly devouring episode after episode out of sheer curiosity. I couldn't wait to unravel the unfolding storyline and discover what happens next. Additionally, I found great pleasure in some exhilarating and well-executed fight scenes.
For me, it doesn't matter where you choose to watch it, just go ahead and do so.
-
A Taxi Driver (Korean: 택시운전사)
- Running Time: 137 minutes
- Genre: drama, history
If you appreciate films, oh, let me tell you, I highly recommend this gem. This is a true story that revolves around a taxi driver who, despite being apolitical, becomes embroiled in the significant uprising of Gwangju's citizens. He plays a crucial role in amplifying the voice of the events that led to the tragic loss of 2000 lives.
I relished watching this production, primarily due to the exceptional performances by the cast. The actors invested their utmost effort in creating a significant cinematic piece that commemorates the events in a memorable manner. What resonated with me the most was the realization that an ordinary individual can transform into a significant figure through the making of right decisions, coupled with a profound sense of humanity and compassion.
Hey, my friend, you absolutely should give it a watch.
-
Bloodhounds (Korean: 사냥개들)
- Seasons: 1
- Episodes: 8
- Running Time: 60 minutes
Here I am, presenting another fantastic show for a binge-watching session.
It revolves around two young, handsome, and athletic men. Rest assured, it's not your typical Netflix series, and they ain't gays. They are simply friends who crossed paths during a boxing match and formed a bond because they both find themselves alone. One of them is compelled to make some fast money, leading them to delve into private loans. It's at this point that all their troubles begin.
This movie revolves around themes of friendship, kicking butts, betrayal, diligent effort, and a pursuit of justice
I indulged in a binge-watch of this one too, and it left me in an emotional whirlwind. I found myself laughing, on the verge of tears, and inspired to gather my resolve and move forward.
What are you waiting for? Go ahead, watch it, and thank me later.
-
Memories of Murder (Korean: 살인의 추억)
- Running Time: 131 minutes
- Genre: detective, crime, comedy
You might be familiar with this one as it is a movie that has garnered international acclaim. If you are not, oh, you're in for a treat, my friend. I wish I could experience it for the first time again, what a thrill that would be!
It follows two detectives who are working to solve a series of homicides involving young women killed on rainy days while wearing something red. This film skillfully plays with colors, camera shots, and emotions. It will make you both laugh and feel a touch of sadness, leaving you thrilled by the end.
Oh, by the way, it is inspired by real-life homicides[4].
I enjoy watching detective series, with the first season of True Detective being a longtime favorite. So, it's no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed this one too. However, it left me with a somewhat bitter taste in my mouth – you'll have to watch it to find out why. Seriously, my dude, go and give it a watch.
-
New World (Korean: 신세계)
- Running Time: 134 minutes
- Genre: action, crime, drama
We're progressing to another film that features the Chinese mafia, Japanese mafia, undercover police, and a plethora of intense knife fights. You should be aware that gun laws are extremely strict in South Korea, making it more practical to engage in combat with bladed weapons. So, if you appreciate visceral action and martial arts, this is definitely a film worth watching.
The protagonist, an undercover policeman embedded in the same criminal organization for eight years, makes a daring decision to go rogue. He adopts a genuine criminal persona, resorting to acts of violence to climb to the pinnacle of the criminal hierarchy.
It revolves around themes of friendship, betrayal, acceptance, and grappling with failure.
I have no regrets watching this film, as it boasts a stellar cast who delivered a spectacular performance. The movie also features impressive fight scenes and unexpected twists. You ought to give it a shot.
Conclusion
I deliberately omitted well-known classics (with one exception) like Parasite, Squid Game and Oldboy because of their international fame. I focused on exploring a curated less known selection of five Korean great works, each chosen based on specific criteria. However, it's important to note that the exclusion of other titles doesn't diminish their quality.
Now is your opportunity to share your recommendations. Feel free to send me feedback about your favorite South Korean movies and TV shows. Kindly inform me which one you found the most enjoyable.
